There’s always someone worse off

09/07/2011 By Heidi Schwegler Leave a Comment

I just returned from the holiday from hell! I went to Phuket and for the first 4 days there was tropical torrential rain that didn’t stop. All sightseeing tours were cancelled, beaches were closed night-markets did not happen. On the fifth day when the sun finally poked its head through the clouds my partner Chris wasn’t feeling well. After visiting the bathroom several times we knew it was time to go to the hospital, so off we went.

After two days in the hospital with me tending to Chris and staying in the fold out couch beside his bed I ended up being admitted for the same stomach infection. Three days later we checked out of the hospital and checked straight into the airport where we travelled home in a weak and weathered state. Thank goodness for travel insurance. It was the best $120 I’ve ever spent!

You might think we felt ripped off, and I must say I felt that way right up until we were discharged from hospital.

When being discharged we got talking to a mum who was visiting her daughter in the hospital. When we asked her why she was there, all the way from Sweden, she told us that her 19 year old daughter, who was in Phuket for a three month Muay Thai boxing training camp, was involved in a motorcycle accident. She broke both her arms and had pins inserted. Worse still was that she lost her right eye…

So although our holiday was ruined, and we didn’t get the experience we had hoped, at least we came home intact and with both our eyes and arms.
